Abstract

This study aims to explore interreligious interactions in Tanjung Balai, North Sumatra, before and after the religious conflict that occurred in 2016, as well as to assess the effectiveness of the religious moderation initiatives launched in 2019. Using a qualitative approach with a case study method, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observations, and document analysis. The findings reveal that the 2016 conflict created prolonged social tensions; however, the religious moderation initiatives implemented in 2019 had a positive impact on improving interfaith relations. The community expressed satisfaction with the moderation programs, with many participants reporting changes in attitudes and increased understanding of tolerance. Nevertheless, challenges in applying moderation principles in daily life persist, requiring ongoing support from the government and society. This study provides valuable insights into the importance of inclusive approaches in managing diversity and offers recommendations to strengthen religious moderation efforts in Tanjung Balai and other regions in Indonesia.
